Survival Tour
World Wide
The Survival Tour is Kebra Ethiopia’s next chapter, a continuation of its mission to use sound as a tool for connection, healing, and resistance. Emerging from the township sessions of Kwa Thema, the tour carries the same raw and spiritual energy into the wider world, turning the spirit of the Survival Sessions into a global movement.
Each stop becomes both a performance and a cultural exchange, a living dialogue between sound system culture, community action, and creative collaboration. From South Africa to Europe, the Caribbean, and the Americas, the tour seeks to connect the diaspora through rhythm, storytelling, and shared experience. It celebrates African sound as a living language that continues to inspire, unite, and empower communities worldwide.
A 20 Year legacy
Founded in 2005 in Kwa Thema, East Rand, Kebra Ethiopia Sound System is a cornerstone of African Reggae sound system culture. The name meaning “Glory to Africa” defines its mission: to use sound as a tool for unity, empowerment, and cultural awakening.
At its foundation are Lekentle Mohlala and Ethel Laka two builders of both sound, community and meaning.
Lekentle, the founder and selector has established a movement grounded in craft, conscious music and community.
Ethel, a visual and cultural artist, extends that work through design, documentation, and storytelling, shaping the visual and educational language of the sound.
Kebra Ethiopia has spent the last two decades building an identity rooted in African self-determination. Their sessions named ‘Survival’ are open Rasta gatherings where Reggae music, dialogue, community and food become tools of survival and connection. What began as a hand-built sound has grown into one of Africa’s most respected cultural movements, performing in over 22 countries while remaining loyal to its home base in Kwa Thema. Each appearance carries the same purpose: to enlighten, empower and unify.
Kebra Ethiopia Sound System stands as a living expression of African creativity and cultural integrity.
Creations
Kebra Ethiopia Sound approaches every artistic expression—whether a poster, artwork, or event—as part of a never-ending loop of community and creativity.
You can directly support the sound by purchasing Ethel’s work. Each piece carries the same spirit of freedom, resistance, and connection that fuels it.
